Colville Land

City of Proud Heritage

Founded in 1882 and incorporated in 1890, Colville, Washington was originally a fur trading post and a military fort. Before the first white man came up the Columbia River, however, various tribes had already been fishing and hunting in the area for thousands of years.

Colville property was eventually used for growing crops and grist mills were set up. Pioneers built homesteads, merchants started coming in and when the military pulled out in 1882, these hardy folk stayed on to establish a town that would become the seat of Stevens County. Colville was named after Lord Andrew Colville, a governor of the Hudson's Bay Company that had first put up the trading post and fort in the early 1800s.

Like most frontier towns, the city has had an interesting past; one which its residents take pride in, as illustrated by the Colville slogan, "City of Proud Heritage." Nowadays, smithies and trappers' cabins have given way to country homes and golf links, but the Colville community is as tightly knit as it was a hundred years ago. This is a just-folks kind of place, where people will greet you warmly when you enter a shop and where your kids can walk to school safely.

Colville's economy is fueled mostly by the industries of timber and mining, with agriculture and manufacturing playing slightly lesser roles.

As the county seat, Colville is where you'll find most of the county, state and federal services. This is the location of the regional offices of the U.S. Forest Service and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. If you live here, you can get through all kinds of bureaucratic paperwork quickly and easily. Colville also has a very active and dedicated local government made up of people who are truly a part of the community.
