"A Place For All Seasons"
50 miles south of Canada and 45 miles north of Spokane is the small town of Chewelah, Washington. Located in the heart of Stevens County real estate, it's a secluded place, but it nonetheless remains easily accessible through U.S. Highway 395 which runs right through town.
Gold was what drew people to the area in the late 1800s, and it was a boom that would last for quite some time. It wasn't until after World War II that the town's Old Dominion Mine would stop producing the precious yellow metal, and by this time Chewelah had already lasted far longer than other boomtowns.
Chewelah sits at the mouth of a creek with the same name and is made up of fertile land liberally dotted with stands of firs, pines, cedars and larches. It is, quite simply, beautiful. Some of the luckier residents have Chewelah, WA real estate near brooks and other waterways, where they can wake up and go to bed everyday to the soothing sound of gurgling waters.
Though Chewelah is a small town, that doesn't mean that folks here don't know how to have fun. In fact, the area is well known statewide for its abundance of recreational activities. Aside from the nearby natural wonders, the town is home to the Chewelah Golf and Country Club, a 27-hole course that challenges every kind of player with its fifty white silica bunkers and five lakes. Be sure not to miss Chataqua Days as well, an annual event that features handpicked crafts, a carnival and live performances.
Chewelah's most famous attraction lies ten miles east of the town proper and on a mountain of the same name. If you're a ski nut, then you'll probably be familiar with the 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort, "the region's best family resort." A top winter destination, it has the driest powder imaginable and almost 1,900 vertical feet from Chewelah peak to the base area. The fantastic views are a bonus.
